Coco Chanel first popularized the mariniere shirt in 1917 at her shop in Deauville, France. Since then, chic women around the world have sported the iconic look. French-sailor striped shirts have had a long life — and are back again for spring men’s and women’s wear.

Audrey Hepburn, the epitome of effortless chic, sports the look in the 1950s.

The look was embraced by iconic actresses, including Sophia Loren, seen here in the late 1950s.

Natalie Wood tries the stripes in a lighter wash in 1957.

Elizabeth Taylor wore a mariniere shirt in the 1970 film “Only Game in Town.”

Wider stripes became associated with the “mod” look of the early ’70s. Here, Peggy Lipton in “The Mod Squad.”

Men get in on the look as well. The Ramones rocked the stripes in 1981.

These modern day beauties, whose looks are followed closely by trend-watchers, also sport the signature stripes:

Gwyneth Paltrow,

Ashley Olsen,

Whether it’s a top, dress, bathing suit, or even shoes…stripes will always be a classic staple here at The Seaside Style.

Soludos are based on the traditional espadrilles that have been sold in markets and on beaches in the Mediterranean for centuries. Shaped by five centuries of tradition, Soludos are the perfect shoe for the beach, the city, and everywhere in between. Long treasured in the Mediterranean for their classic style, comfort and flexibility.

Coming this Spring!
